The Museum of Science and Industry -- MOSI -- in Tampa is a perfect place for a weekend trip with the kids. But, get this, technically the museum isn't a "museum" at all!

Why do they call it MOSI?

Rain, planes, brains, electricity explained, even fake hurricanes! There's so
...more much to see and learn at Tampa's Museum of Science and Industry -- MOSI.

Or, is as it used to be pronounced, Mossy.

"In the early days, the initials were used M-O-S-I. But it was pronounced 'mossy' -- like the green moss that grows on trees," said MOSI President Wit Ostrenko.

"So, finally, as we got the facility open, we started expanding it, we went to 'mosey' -- like moseying along."

For more than two decades, Ostrenko has run MOSI, showing off the practical side of science.

But the story of this amazing place goes back much further -- 50 years.

In the 1960's Hillsborough County created a youth museum. That got the name Museum of

TAMPA, Fla. -- Facing massive proposed budgets by Florida lawmakers, University of South Florida students are turning back the clock to get some attention in Tallahassee.

Hundreds of students are hand-writing letters to state legislators.

"It's been a long time," USF student
...more Brittany Cobb says about the last time she wrote out a letter. "To see our generation take on writing letters and kind of going old school, taking that time out of our day, it's really impactful."

Students have a tent set up near the library to collect letters and are going around campus with envelopes filled with blank letters. They are asking professors to give students five minutes to fill one out.

USF student Jack LoBianco thinks it's much more effective than sending an email or filling out a petition online. "They see probably thousands of template letters every single day and they just throw them away," he said.

Student body president Matt Diaz wants his

TALLAHASSEE, Florida - After holding their first face-to-face meeting since a falling out last fall, USF President Judy Genshaft and State Sen. JD Alexander, R-Lake Wales, then held their tongues in speaking to the press.

Genshaft, flanked by USF Trustee Brian Lamb and USF's Director
...more of Community Relations and Hillsborough County Commissioner Les Miller, said the meeting was "productive" and the two sides agreed to share new numbers this week.

USF faces a proposed 58% cut to its 2012-2013 budget, the steepest cut of any university.  But Alexander, who proposed the Senate's budget, says Genshaft was helping him come to a better "understanding" of the university's needs.

Several legislators tell 10 News it's the first step to a compromise where USF's proposed funding would be partially restored and Alexander could get help in making USF-Polytechnic in Lakeland the state's 12th university ahead of the Board of Governor's 3-to-5-year

SARASOTA, Florida -- The proposal to cut the University of South Florida's budget by 58% has shocked a lot of people in the Tampa Bay area, including community leaders.

But not one particular student.

In some ways, Michael Long, a sophomore at the New College of Florida, saw
...more this coming months ago.

"I knew it was going to get spicy," he said Monday.

Long, the lone student on the Florida Board of Governors, called out Sen. JD Alexander (R-Lake Wales) during a November meeting, where the board was debating whether to make USF-Polytech an independent school.

Long warned Alexander might play a drastic card.

"I do not feel very well represented by JD," he said, "he told me personally that he would quit fighting for higher education if he didn't get what he wanted on this issue."

Long says he had no idea a massive budget cut would be put on the table, but he could tell the senator may use his power.

"I did feel

Tampa, Florida --  Six years ago, tow truck driver Donald Montanez says he was in fear for his life and the lives of his employees when he fired his gun into a car driven by Glen Rich as he says it barreled toward him.

Rich died from the gunshot wound later that day.

Today, a
...more jury is being selected as Montanez stands trial for murder.

"I live with him [Glen Rich] every day in my thoughts.  I'm sorry he's gone, but I'm alive because someone tried to take my life and tried to take my employees' lives.  Unfortunately, I live with that now," Montanez told 10 News Anchor Reginald Roundtree in an exclusive interview last week.

Montanez and his defense attorney, Jay Hebert claim Montanez was justified in the shooting under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" statute which gives a person the right to use deadly force if they feel threatened, even in a public place.

The men now hope to convince a jury had Montanez not fired his weapon, he wouldn't be

Update: After her flight to Tallahassee was delayed Monday morning, USF President Judy Genshaft booked a charter flight in order to meet with State Sen. JD Alexander at 1 p.m.

Their meeting will reportedly be a closed-door discussion, instead of being public as originally
...more planned.

Earlier Story:

Tallahassee, Florida -- The two powerhouses in the Bulls Budget Battle are set to meet face-to-face Monday.

One one side of the table: University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft.

On the other: State Senator JD Alexander (R-Lake Wales), creator of the plan to take away nearly 60 percent of USF's state funding.

The slugfest between these two goes back several months; they are not fans of each other.

Last year, JD Alexander launched a crusade. He wants to take one of USF's four campuses -- USF Polytechnic in Lakeland -- and move it out of the USF system.

It would become Florida Polytechnic University,

...more truck northbound on I-275 over the bridge with a long-barreled pistol. Some of the motorists followed Schreiber as he exited I-275 onto Fowler Avenue.
Police caught up with Schreiber and arrested him on weapons charges. The gun, which turned out to be a fake revolver was also recovered. Schreiber was released later that day on $500 bail.

TAMPA, Fla. -- On Saturday, 10 News was the only station at USF as State Senators Jim Norman (R-Tampa) and Arthenia Joyner (D-Tampa) met with USF president Judy Genshaft.

"We continue to talk about what's best for our students, what we can do to make sure the University of South
...more Florida is treated fairly," Genshaft says.

"We believe that there's going to be a positive outcome and I'm encouraged by us moving forward," Sen. Norman agrees.

On Monday, President Genshaft will meet about the possibility of USF losing more of its state funding than over universities in Florida with State Senator JD Alexander (R-Lake Wales). He chairs the Senate Budget Committee and has pushed to turn USF Polytechnic in Lakeland into an independent state university.

"We're looking forward to Monday's meeting," Genshaft says. "I hope it's as fruitful as this [meeting] is."

Part of the problem is that about $77 million is expected to be in USF Tampa's reserves
Feb 18, 2012 at 2:52 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- The 10 News Investigators tracked down Gov. Rick Scott Thursday morning to deliver letters from Tampa Bay residents and see if he would commit to rejecting the proposed USF budget cuts.

Many felt the disproportionate 58% cut to USF's budget was political
...more retaliation from State Sen. JD Alexander, R-Lake Wales, who has battled USF President Judy Genshaft over control of USF-Polytechnic in Lakeland.

"I don't believe that any university should be harmed for the help of another university," Gov. Scott said of the proposed cuts to USF.

Scott also indicated he wouldn't support Alexander's effort to force an immediate Polytechnic separation from USF.  The state's Board of Governors set out a methodical three-to-five-year plan for independence.

"We have a process, and the Board of Governors have set up a process to work through the Poly-Tech issue.  I believe that's a process we should continue to go through. That's my goal, to

TAMPA, Fla. -- Student Senate President Khaled Hassouneh says his fellow students are outraged that USF is the only state university facing extremely deep cuts.

Hassouneh says students understand the economic hardship that the state is going through, but he says all state universities
...more should be treated equally.

USF's 58 percent cut would be matched by a 26 percent cut at UF and a 22 percent cut for FSU.

10 News was the first TV station to shine the spotlight on JD Alexander's "bullying" last fall and many say severe cuts proposed to USF's budget are the retaliation they feared from the powerful senator last fall.

On Monday, President Genshaft will meet with JD Alexander, who has pushed to turn USF Polytechnic in Lakeland into Florida's 12th state university.

TAMPA BAY, Florida - With the tide potentially turning on the fight to save USF, lawmakers are still faced with difficult decisions regarding how best to balance the 2012-2013 budget.

The state projects a possible $2 billion deficit next year and the Senate Budget Committee proposed
...more $400 million in cuts to higher education.  The House proposed a much more modest cut, but wanted to cut more out of the state's Medicaid budget.

House Democrats say none of the cuts are necessary if state revenues are increased.  State Rep. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg, tells 10 News that closing loopholes companies are exploiting in Internet sales tax laws are hurting Florida's brick-and-mortar businesses and costing the state between $500 million and $1 billion a year in lost revenue.

"Now is the time to step back, take a breath, and ask how we got into this situation," Rouson said in a statement. "It's crucial to remember that we don't live in a vacuum of cuts. Rather,

Sarasota, Florida - During a visit to Sarasota's Ringling College of Art and Design, Florida Governor Rick Scott says Ringling is an example of a school putting students to work.

"We want to make sure your tax dollars are spent helping people get jobs. Part of that is getting the
...more right education."

Yet state leaders propose cutting $400 million from state universities, with $103 million coming from USF alone. University officials say the cuts would impact all four campuses, including Sarasota's.

Paul Cajka, third year student at USF Sarasota says, "There's a budgetary shortfall that has to be done. The cuts should be equitable."

Governor Scott says, "I support public education. I am going to do everything I can to support education. I am going to do everything I can to make sure the dollars are allocated fairly."

What "fairly" means is up to interpretation.

State Senator Mike Bennett says it's fair to tap into the university
