Hernando County, Fla. -- Hernando County announced Friday, Feb. 17 that after addressing a few high spots, the staff has confirmed that all dredging in the channel is complete.

...more Hernando Beach Channel tripod, is scheduled for removal in the next week. The final barge and excavator will remain to restore Snapper Canal at the dredged material offloading site.
The county reports the contractor is continuing to work on the punch list items and is on track to meet the March 23 deadline.

Brooksville, Fla. -- On Friday, Feb. 17, the county announced the project contractor, D.A.B. Construction, finished constructing and paving of the left turn lanes on Elgin Boulevard. 
The county says the contractor is paving the final asphalt course along the mainline of Elgin Boulevard
...more and temporary striping has been installed. Some milling work remains to be done on the side street and sod is being installed in the median and will soon be installed on Landover.
Traffic lane adjustments and shifts will no longer be needed as traffic will be using all lanes by the end of this week, depending on weather conditions.
The concrete traffic signal poles and lights at Landover Boulevard have been removed and switched over to the new signals previously installed. New signal features continue being installed/completed/connected to both Mariner and Landover intersections. 
The contract is 344 days into its 390 contract according to the county.

Brooksville, Fla. -- Brooksville Police Department officers were called to the home at 630 North Avenue in response to a stolen fence and swing set.
When they arrived, it was revealed that the suspect, 31-year-old Charles Robinson, had stolen the fence and swing set, hauled them away and
...more scrapped them out at a local recycling center.
Robinson was arrested for dealing in stolen property and petit theft. He was taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Jail where he is held on $5,250 bond.

Police arrested William Morgan, 40, and confiscated 77 marijuana plants from inside and outside the home, along with drug paraphernalia including smoking pipes and grinders. He is being held on $15,500 bond.

On Feb. 15, deputies stumbled upon another drug house while trying find a man with an outstanding warrant at 5145 Chameleon Court in Spring Hill.

During a search of the home, deputies found one-and-a-half pounds of marijuana packaged for sale, MDMA, LSD, mushrooms, numerous items of drug paraphernalia, over $2,500 in cash and 3 handguns.

Brooksville, FL -- Officers got a surprise during a thorough search of a woman as she was being processed at the Hernando County Jail Tuesday.
According to Brooksville Police, 33-year-old Jeri Chambers was arrested around 4 a.m. during a traffic stop at the intersection of Cobb Road and
...more Cortez Boulevard. During a K-9 sniff of the car, officers were alerted to a small amount of crack cocaine in Chambers' purse, who was a passenger in the car.
While being processed at the jail, officers also found a crack pipe hidden in her butt. Chambers was on probation for sale of cocaine at the time of her arrest.
She is being charged with possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, intro of contraband into a detention facility, and violation of probation. She is being held without bond. 
The driver, Daniel Parker, and other passenger, Tracy Moten, were issued a notice to appear for possession of drug paraphernalia also found in the car.

Spring Hill, FL -- A man was caught Friday after he wrestled away from an arresting officer and fled to a wooded area behind a Spring Hill Best Buy.
According to the police report, around 1:43 p.m. on Feb. 10, 26-year-old Adam Carter was caught stealing a Samsung cell phone case from the
...more Best Buy on Wendy Ct., the same store he stole a Samsung cell phone from on Jan. 9. When the officer tried to put Carter in the police car he attempted to flee. When the officer grabbed Carter by the handcuffs, he started to twist his wrists causing bruising and cuts to the officers hand and forearm.
Carter broke free and jumped the fence behind the plaza and disappeared into the heavily wooded area. Carter was found a short time later by the air unit and was arrested. He was also arrested on Jan. 14 for Retail Theft but provided a fake address so he could bond out.

The Hernando County Tourism Bureau, with the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce, hosted a Ribbon Cutting and Open House at their new Visitor Information Center and Tourism Bureau on Thursday, Feb. 9.

HERNANDO CO., Fla. -- The Hernando County Sheriff's Office has issued a Silver Alert for 79-year-old Thomas McManus, who was last seen on February 9 around 7 p.m.

According to deputies, McManus said he was going to Pennsylvania to straighten out some financial issues with some
...more property he owns. The family tells deputies, however, that there are no financial issues and that McManus suffers from an irreversible deterioration of intellectual faculties condition, but is not currently prescribed any medication.

Thomas McManus is 5'10" approximately 225 pounds with grey hair and balding. He wears glasses and has a strong New York accent. Family members could not provide a clothing description, but he is known to wear blue jeans and a collared shirt. He was last seen driving a 4-door 2007 Buick Lacern with Florida tag DV4383A.

Brooksville, Florida -- A Brooksville woman racked up over $25,000 at local gas stations on two credit cards she stole from her boyfriend's parents.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, 35-year-old Christina Hill was living at her boyfriend, Robert Lovelock Jr.'s
...more parents' home when she stole cards.

Lovelock's parents reported the cards stolen from their home around Nov. 13 and that 95 transactions were made at various locations in Hernando County, totaling approximately $26,100.

Records show the majority of the purchases came from area gas stations, a Dollar Store and Walmart. Over $23,000 was purchased on a Chase Bank Visa card, which police say also affects the bank since their policy is to reimburse cardholders of losses due to fraudulent purchases. The rest was made on an American Express card.

During an investigation into the theft, video surveillance showed Hill using the cards in question in all instances.  After police

BROOKSVILLE, Florida (AP) - The Florida Highway Patrol says a teenager was killed while racing with another teen in Brooksville.

According to a FHP report, 18-year-old Jonathon Parker was racing 19-year-old Paul Snyder down a two-lane road Thursday evening.

...more approached oncoming traffic, troopers say Snyder attempted to move into the northbound lane to avoid a collision. His car hit the front left side of Parker's vehicle and both drivers lost control of their vehicles. 

Troopers say Parker's car hit a tree and he died at the scene.

Authorities say Snyder fled the scene, but witnesses helped identify him. He was contact by troopers and returned to the scene.

FHP is investigating the crash.

Brooksville, FL -- A City of Brooksville employee was arrested Thursday for stealing over 700 pounds of metal.

According to Brooksville Police, an investigation revealed 29-year-old Mark Angel Cavanagh, of Homossasa, stole the metal from the City of Brooksville Public Works Department
...more and sold it to a recycling center in Citrus County for 1,118.30.

Cavanagh was working at the public works department at the time of the theft.  He is being charged with Grand Larceny and is being held on $2,000 bond.
