Sheriff investigates construction fraud scammer

Avon Park, Florida- The Highlands County Sheriff's Office is investigating a construction fraud case in the Avon Park area of Highlands County. 
In January of 2012 the victim, a 92-year-old woman was approached by a traveling "construction crew" who convinced the victim her roof was in...more need of repairs. The victim was told they could coat the roof, preventing leaks from developing and reducing her energy bill.
After paying for the service, the Sheriff's Office reports an investigation revealed the construction crew was not licensed in Highlands County and the work they completed appeared to consist of simply painting the victim's single roof.
Detectives are now releasing surveillance photographs of a white balding male who investigators say cashed the victim's check.
Investigators warn citizens to only do business with legitimate, properly licensed construction companies. To verify a license you can contact the Highlands County Building Department at (863)

SFCC celebrates graduation

Arcadia, Florida-- South Florida Community College's Class of 2012 hugged friends, family members, and favorite professors, reminisced about classes and club activities, and talked about what they plan to do with the next adventure of their lives at the college's annual commencement service...more Thursday, May 3.

"We are at our graduation. How does that feel?" Keiaria Williams, student speaker, asked the new graduates who assembled in the SFCC Theatre for the Performing Arts to accept their hard-earned degrees, certificates, and diplomas. 

Judging from the joyous, enthusiastic response from her peers, being part of the Class of 2012 felt pretty good.

Along with sharing her pride in their common accomplishments, Williams encouraged her fellow Panthers to apply the knowledge and abilities they acquired at SFCC to the challenges that will meet them in their journey through life.

Chrysler Drive for the Kids raised $1,760 for Avon Elementary

Avon Park, Florida-- Wells Motor Company helped to raise $1,760 for Avon Elementary School with the Chrysler Brand’s Drive for the Kids™ program. 
The fundraising event took place May 3 in conjunction with Avon Elementary's art show. 
Participants test-drove the Chrysler brand's...more award-winning, 2012 Town & Country Minivan, and in turn earned a $10 contribution for the school from the company.
Wells Motor Company supplied the vehicles, and volunteers from the dealership were on hand to assist in the fundraising drives.

Tea Party candidate dies from stroke

SEBRING, Florida (AP) - Officials in Highlands County say supervisor of elections candidate Rick Beebe suffered a massive stroke and died during a Tea Party forum at a local restaurant.

Highlands Today reports 52-year-old Beebe had just finished the interview session Tuesday when he...more started sweating, passed out and fell from his chair at Homer's Smorgasbord in Sebring.

The newspaper reports a paramedic and a nurse in the crowd tried to survive him. He was pronounced dead at Florida Hospital a short time later.

Highlands Tea Party President Jack Nelson says Beebe was the only candidate who received two or three rounds of applause on his answers Tuesday night.

Dirty Dozen mud run in Sebring!

Dirty Dozen, a two-mile fun run with lots of mud (Dirty) and 12 insane obstacles (Dozen), is designed to challenge your fitness level and tickle your funny...more bone!
The Sebring Chamber of Commerce says you will crawl, climb, jump, swing, run and giggle through the crazy course for the simple reward of great music, cold beer, a cool t-shirt, and mud in places mud just shouldn't be!
There will also be a  Dirty "half" Dozen is for ages 7-12, consisting of a 1-mile fun run with six obstacles.
