Venice, Florida -- Venice Theatre has announced registration is now open for their annual summer theatre camps and classes. 
This summer, the students will be challenged to be "bigger and better".
The six-week campers will audition, rehearse and perform a full-scale musical production
...more on MainStage and the three-week campers will perform a fully-mounted studio production on MainStage. 
Instructors will include national theatre professionals Cathy Baudrit, Kelly Duyn, Joan Hazel, Cathleen McClendon, Ronald Myroup, Sandy Davisson, Amy Blake and Gladys Varga. VT's own playwright-in-residence, Ronald Myroup, will create an original script for the six-week session that will be performed on the theatre's MainStage July 13 & 14.
The theatre's Education and Outreach Department offers several summer camp sessions ranging from two weeks to six weeks for children who have graduated from grades 2 through 12 as well as a variety of classes for adults.

Venice, Florida -- Students of The Loveland Center will present four performances of "Ladies and Gentlemen: The Beatles!", on Venice Theatre's MainStage May 31 - June 3.
2012 marks the 17th anniversary of the partnership between Venice Theatre and The Loveland Center. The collaboration
...more between the two non-profit organizations gives adult students with developmental challenges the opportunity to learn life skills through theatre study.
Participants meet at the theatre twice a week for classes and rehearsals which culminate in the Follies, a full-scale production on Venice Theatre's MainStage.
As the title suggests, this year's production centers around the music of The Beatles. Written by Ronald Krine Myroup, "Ladies and Gentlemen: The Beatles!" is a musical revue about Penny, Lucy, Judy and Michelle who, at age 64, reflect back to when they were teenagers and won tickets to see The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.

North Port, Florida -- If you've been trying to get into the George Mullen Activity Center, you'll have to wait just a bit longer.

A portion of the center, located on 1602 Kramer Way, will be closed through the weekend due to floor renovations.

Venice, Florida -- The FHP, Venice District is conducting a DUI Wolfpack Detail tonight, May 11 at 10 p.m.
The details are set up to remove impaired drivers from the roadways and ultimately enhance the safety of drivers.
There is no exact location of where the detail will be held

Venice, Florida -- The Venice Theatre is holding its Summer Stock Auditions May 12 and 15 for its program for teens and college-age students.
Summer Stock VT '12 is a high-energy musical theater "boot camp" where members are immersed in all areas of theater. This year's production is "The
...more Best Little Whorehouse in Texas".
Although there may be one or two adults cast in the show, Summer Stock VT ‘12 is primarily designed for college-age students, graduating seniors and high school students entering their sophomore, junior or senior years. The program is for acting students who are serious about pursuing careers in theatre. Acceptance into the tuition-based program is by audition.
The eight-week program will culminate in a full musical production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on Venice Theatre’s MainStage July 25 to Aug. 5.
Auditions will be held at the theatre on two days - Saturday, May 12 at 2 p.m. and Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m.

Venice, Florida -- Famed singer and impressionist Paul Tanner who has performed for Pope John Paul II at Shea Stadium and sold out audiences in Las Vegas and on Broadway will bring his critically acclaimed one-man show to the Venice Community Center on June 9.

Venice, Florida -- Join the United Way of South Sarasota County for the United Way Dine Out Day at Bogey's Restaurant and Sports Pub, located at 652 E. Venice Avenue on Monday, May 14.
Bogey's management will donate 10% of all proceeds from lunch and dinner to UWSSC. The money raised will
...more be used to fund 30 agencies and 39 programs in the Venice, Englewood, North Port, Laurel, Nokomis and Osprey communities.
These programs serve local individuals, families, children and seniors who need help. The funding will touch, change and improve the lives of over 47,000 local families in these communities.

North Port, Florida - The City of North Port's first Telephone Town Hall meeting on May 3 proved to be a success with more than 1,000 North Port residents participating.

According to the city, City Commission Chair Tom Jones answered 30 questions dealing with issues such as
...more sidewalks, water and sewer expansions, street lights, road repairs, and more that were asked by residents participating on the call. At one point, the city says 1,141 people were listening.

"I thought that the questions were very positive," Jones said in a release. "I just hope that people who listened in felt the same. This was all about neighbors talking to each other. That's what we are doing here. We're across the fence, just talking to each other."

Venice, Florida -- On April 29, the Venice Theatre held a country-themed jamboree to honor its volunteers who were invited to “pull up their boots, put on their cowboy hats and kick up their heels” at the annual celebration.
Approximately 425 volunteers attended the event which kicked off

More than a dozen awards were given (a list follows); 11 new members were inducted into the Hall of Fame; four graduating high school seniors were honored; and long-time volunteer Joan Dillon was recognized for her service to the theatre which began in 1957.
Entertainment was provided by the “Foxettes” who did a country clog dance for the occasion and the casts of Smokey Joe’s Café, [title of show], and Radio Gals.
The grand raffle prize each year is a theatre trip to New York City. Volunteers who have served 500 hours or more are eligible to win.

VENICE, Florida - Many of the 263 pure bred dogs taken from a Sarasota County home, are ready for adoption.

Sarasota County Animal Services removed the dogs from a house in Venice last week.

Authorities
...more say most of the Chihuahuas, poodles, schnauzers and other small dogs kept in chicken coop-like structures outdoors had severely matted fur, fleas, intestinal parasites and eye issues.

All the animals were medically evaluated before they were made available for adoption.

Venice, Florida -- A man and a woman from Punta Gorda were arrested Wednesday night for selling meth to an undercover detective.
According to the Sarasota Sheriff's Office, 25-year-old Kasey Ellison and 44-year-old Mark Lynch met with the detective at a Venice hotel to deliver two ounces
...more of methamphetamine in exchange for $2,400.

During the exchange, Ellison put the drugs on the bed and took out a pipe to smoke them. At that point, the two were arrested.
A stun gun was also found in one of her bags.
Ellison was charged with Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession of an Electronic Weapon by a Convicted Felon and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She has 12 prior arrest in Sarasota County for drug charges and other related crimes.
Lynch was charged with Principal to Trafficking in Methamphetamine, as well as two misdemeanors for driving with a suspended license and operating an unregistered

North Port, Florida -- The first in a series of Telephone Town Hall meetings is set to begin Thursday, May 3, offering residents of North Port an opportunity to directly communicate with their elected leaders without ever leaving their homes.

During this time, residents will have an opportunity to participate in an open forum where they can ask questions about general topics and issues of interest.

Sarasota County, Florida -- More than 5,000 works of art created by students ages 5 to 18 will be on exhibit at two art centers from May 1 - May 24.

...more Show, which opens Monday, May 7, continues through Thursday, May 24 at Venice Art Center.
The 2012 exhibits are sponsored by Sarasota County Schools in partnership with the Education Foundation of Sarasota County, Art Center Sarasota and the Venice Art Center. They include artwork created by students from elementary, middle and high schools throughout the district.
In the north county show, high school students compete in 12 categories for ribbons and prizes, and for five special $100 cash awards for Creativity, Originality, Most Expressive, Most Marketable and the Esther Freeman Best of Show Award.
