SARASOTA, Fla.- He was not a household name. In fact, even hardcore Florida Gators football fans probably don't remember him today. But those who watched Tony Waters play at Sarasota High School say the 1976 graduate was unforgettable.
"He was, at that time, the best. He was the best...more in the area, no question about it," said longtime Sarasota High Football coach Charlie Cleland, who spent 37 years at the school. Cleland still remembers how proud he was the day his star player got a full ride to the University of Florida.
"I'm excited for him every step of the way, because he's such a deserving young man."
But in 1978, the final game of his sophomore year, Waters suffered a devastating injury to his knee.
"He played in the Miami game and he was probably our star in that game," said longtime Gators Booster Club member and local attorney Art Ginsburg. "He got hurt in the end and it really destroyed him."
Nelson Agholor took the microphone and had the national stage on ESPN and in coaches offices at Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Southern Cal.
In this crazy era of recruiting and Twitter, Agholor kept quiet his college choice. Then he pulled a USC hat from below the...more table and announced his intention to play for the Trojans.
"I always loved Southern Cal," Agholor said. "and I decided I wanted my dream to come true and be a Trojan."
Agholor was not alone at Berkeley Prep. Linebacker Schyler Miles signed with Kansas and defensive end Reggie Barnes accepted a scholarship to the Air Force Academy.
Plant produced their usual haul of Division I signees. Cornerback Antonio Crawford signed with Miami after getting a late offer from the Hurricanes after nearly a year of being committed to Georgia Tech.
Wide receiver Austin Aikens signed with Western Kentucky. Safety Drew Madhu will play for Stanford. Linebacker Tate Rogers
National Signing Day is here, and recruits across the country are gearing up for plenty of last-minute pitches and school visits as head coaches look to shape their program for years to come.
The 19th-ranked Florida Gators are still in search of their first true road win of the season, as they take on the South Carolina Gamecocks this evening in SEC action at Colonial Life Arena.
